Milestones in Food 8000 BC - Mankind first began farming, growing crops and raising animals for food instead of hunting and gathering for food. This allowed towns and villages to grow as people no longer had to travel around to get supplies of food. 4000 BC - Salting and drying, as well as the use of snow and ice, were developed for storing food for long times. 3000 BC - The olive tree is thought to have first grown in Asia. Olives have been grown in the Mediterranean for about 5,000 years, making them one of the oldest fruits. 400 - Pasta, the Italian word for dough, was probably brought into Italy by 1492 - Columbus "discovered" the West Indies island of Guadeloupe. New plants and vegetables such as pineapple, potato, and tomatoes were discovered in America that did not grow in Europe. These were brought back and successfully grown and eaten in Europe. 1621 - The first Thanksgiving is celebrated. 1773 - After the Boston Tea Party, coffee becomes the colonist beverage choice. 1790 - The original name for french fries was "potatoes, fried in the French manner" that is how Thomas Jefferson first described the dish. Jefferson introduced french fries to the colonies in the late 1700s 1803 - The first home icebox is patented; the iceman cometh. 1812 - James Meese published the first recipe for tomato catchup. F. & J. Heinz Company began selling tomato ketchup in 1876. 1845 - People visiting Poland Springs Maine pay for bottles of water. 1853 -Native American George Crum was a chef at a Saratoga Springs, New York, resort, when customer Cornelius Vanderbilt complained that his french fries were too thick. George Crum fried up a serving of paper thin potatoes cooked to a crunchy crisp texture. The dish dubbed “Saratoga Chips" became a favorite. However, potato chips did not gain wide-spread popularity until the 1920s, when a Mrs. Scudder began mass producing the first potato chips packaged in wax paper bags in 1926 and Herman Lay began producing Lay's potato chips, the first successfully marketed national brand. 1858 - The screw top jar is invented by John Mason. 1860 - Louis Pasteur heats milk to to kill germs and bacteria developing a process to be known as pasteurization. 1868 - George Pullman rolls out the first dining car. 1871 - An "improved compound for culinary use" called margarine was patented; U.S. Patent #110,626 was issued to Henry W. Bradley of Binghamton, New York. 1886 - John Pemberton begins selling medicinal syrup as a fountain drink creating Coca-Cola. 1886 - The first working dishwasher is invented. 1888 - The first known vending machines appear in New York City subways selling gum. 1897 - An 88 percent sugar gelatin mixture is created by a cough medicine maker; his wife calls it Jell-O. 1901 - Satori Kato invents instant coffee; it becomes popular only in 1938 when Nestles lauches it's Nescafe brand of freeze-dried crystals. 1902 - For the first time patrons can put in a few coins in a slot, open a door and grab a hot meal at the first Automat in Philadelphia. 1902 - The Kellogg brothers create cornflakes. 1905 - Eleven year old Frank Epperson leaves a stick in a cup of soda outside overnight creating the Popsicle. 1905 - The first ready-made mayonnaise was sold at Richard Hellman's New York deli. 1918 - Having dropped from 200 pounds to 150 pounds, Lulu Peters writes the first known diet book to endorse calorie counting. Two million copies are sold. 1920 -1933 Prohibition. 1920 - Caesar salad was invented in Tijuana, Mexico by Caesar Gardini 1922 - Steven Poplawski puts a spinning blade on the bottom of a container and the blender is created. 1935 - The trademark for the name "cheeseburger" was awarded in 1935 to Louis Ballast of the Humpty Dumpty Drive-In, in Denver, Colorado. 1937 - The shopping cart makes its debut. 1946 - Percy Spencer stands too close to a magnetron and the candy bar in his pocket melt. A year later he shows off his 750 pound microwave oven. 1953 - Swanson marries a postwar demand for time saving devices to the nations newest craze and the TV dinners is created. 1964 - Ron Popeil pitches his Veg-O-Matic on TV; the infomercial is born. 1972 - The Spa on Harvard Square in Cambridge Mass. puts yogurt through a soft-serve ice cream machine and frozen yogurt makes its debut. 1989 - Hospitality Services Group is founded to help independent restaurants throughout New England. 1993 - The Food Network begins broadcasting; the celebrity chef is here to stay.
