    Chickens-A Brief History

The breeds and varieties of domestic chickens known today are generally believed to have descended mainly from the Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus bankiva, also called Gallus gallus) of Southeast Asia where it still exists in the wild. Domesticated chickens may have been kept in India as long ago as 3,200 B.C., and records indicate they were kept in China and Egypt as early as 1,400 B.C. The earliest domestications of fowl were mainly for cockfighting rather than for food. Cockfighting was suppressed in the Western World and replaced by poultry exhibition before the 18th Century. Poultry exhibitions started in America in 1849. Interest in these shows grew and numerous breeds and varieties were and continue to be developed, leading to the large number of varieties now in existence.

The sign in a restaurant bathroom read:
    "Employees Must Wash Hands"

    Under the sign, someone wrote:
I waited and waited, but I finally washed them myself.

    Food Milestones

8000 BC - Mankind first began farming, growing crops and raising animals for food instead of hunting and gathering for food. This allowed towns and villages to grow as people no longer had to travel around to get supplies of food.

4000 BC - Salting and drying, as well as the use of snow and ice, were developed for storing food for long times.

3000 BC - The olive tree is thought to have first grown in Asia. Olives have been grown in the Mediterranean for about 5,000 years, making them one of the oldest fruits.

400 - Pasta, the Italian word for dough, was probably brought into Italy by German invaders who invaded Italy throughout the 5th century. The German word for pasta -- nudel -- gave us the English word noodle. Italians like to tell us that the famous Italian traveler Marco Polo brought pasta back from China in 1295. But, pasta is older than that. Macaroni is mentioned in writings from as early as 1200.
